Modern tea scoops are mainly made of bamboo. Originally, however, a medicine spoon was used as a substitute. Therefore, it is said that ivory and tortoiseshell were the materials. In the era of Sen no Rikyu, things made of bamboo became mainstream.
The bamboo of the material is generally used bamboo of the bitter bamboo family. Among them, it is said that “sarashitake (white bamboo)” is often used. In addition, it seems that "sugar bamboo" and trees used for the ceiling part of the sunken hearth are sometimes used.
