“Chashaku” can also be made by shaving it yourself. There are sets for that, but if you're serious about it, start by cutting the bamboo.
Bamboo is felled from the end of November to February. Leave the cut bamboo out of the sun for at least half a year, then heat it on a gas stove to remove it. After removing the oil, the bamboo is dried in the sun for several weeks, and then left to rest for several months to several years. This completes the bamboo that can be used as a tea scoop. The bamboo is split and the entire back is flattened so that it can be easily bent and shaved. After that, immerse it in a container filled with water and when it has absorbed enough water, boil it in a pot to soften it. Bend it with a candle and soak it in water to cool it down. Although it depends on the season, the shavings are ready in five days! Next, use a pencil to draw the shape of the chashaku that you want to sharpen. The iron rule is to shave from the thickest to the thinnest! When the shape is completed, use a file to finish it beautifully. Once you are satisfied with the shape, you can finish by inserting a single stroke into the kiristop and the tip of the paddle.
